چکیده

Di¡usion tensor imaging studies in schizophrenia have demonstratedlowerdi¡usion anisotropy withinwhitematter thatprovides information about brain white matter integrity. We have examined whether whitematter is abnormal in ¢rst-episode schizophrenia by using di¡usion tensor imaging. Twenty-one schizophrenic patients and healthy controls underwent di¡usion tensor imaging scans that analyzed by using a rigorous voxel-based approach. We found that fractional anisotropy inwhitematter of thepatientswas lower than that in controls at the cerebral peduncle, frontal regions, inferior temporal gyrus, medial parietal lobes, hippocampal gyrus, insula, right anterior cingulum bundle and right corona radiata. These results suggested that white matter integrity of the whole brain was disrupted in early illness onset of schizophrenia. NeuroReport 17:23^26 c 2006 LippincottWilliams &Wilkins.

White matter integrity of the whole brain is disrupted in first-episode schizophrenia.

Diffusion tensor imaging studies in schizophrenia have demonstrated lower diffusion anisotropy within white matter that provides information about brain white matter integrity. We have examined whether white matter is abnormal in first-episode schizophrenia by using diffusion tensor imaging. Twenty-one schizophrenic patients and healthy controls underwent diffusion tensor imaging scans that ana...

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Findings of White Matter Changes in First Episode Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review

Earlier structural magnetic resonance imaging in schizophrenia have noted smaller white matter volumes in diverse brain regions and recent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have allowed better elucidation of changes in brain white matter integrity within the illness. As white matter abnormalities have been reported to occur early in the course of schizophrenia, we systematically review ext...

Evaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

Regional axonal abnormalities in first episode schizophrenia: preliminary evidence based on high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging.

Connectivity has been implicated as a major source of brain abnormality in schizophrenia. The current study focused on first episode schizophrenia to identify possible early pathology in axonal structure. First episode schizophrenic patients and healthy controls were scanned in a 1.5-Tesla scanner during which high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) was acquired. Histogram analysis reveal...
